Mens First Grade Coach
John Buchanan has joined Wests as Head Coach for the 2018-19 season. He has enjoyed a long and decorated career as a cricket coach and Wests are very pleased to have him lead our coaching team.
John became the Australian cricket team coach in 1999 and in 2007 finished a very successful campaign as coach of Australia. John coached the team to a world record number of straight Test Matches (16 wins), consecutive One Day International victories (21) and set an unprecedented World Cup record with 2 World Cups and 24 games undefeated. At the time of his retirement, the Australian Cricket Team were the World Cup Champions, Test Cricket Champions and One Day Champions, and also returned the Ashes to Australia in early 2007. This record of victories makes John the most successful coach in history with a winning record of over 75%.
John is also renowned for delivering Queensland their first Sheffield Shield title in 1994/5. In five years of coaching Queensland, they won the Sheffield Shield and Mercantile Mutual Cup twice each.
John has a degree in Human Movement, a teaching Diploma and a Master of Arts in Sports Administration from Alberta University in Canada. He has also been granted an honorary doctorate by the University of Queensland for his services to sport, and has also graduated from the 5 day intensive Company Director’s Course conducted by the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
This education has influenced John’s coaching style, which is vastly different to those used by cricket coaches for generations. John has taken his teams on their respective journeys to ‘Everest’ or being a team that dominates their marketplace by trying to play a different game to everyone else. He was the first coach to use computer analysis of every ball bowled, and he retained a unique approach to coach the ‘whole person’ rather than just the athlete.
