Junior Cricket

Wests Junior Cricket Club progressed with plans to merge with the Seniors at Western Suburbs District Cricket Club during the 2017-18 season and this process is planned to be complete before the start the start of the 2018-19 season. The merger will create one club, providing direct pathways for our young cricketers from junior competition through the Premier Youth competitions run by the senior club (Taverner's for boys and Youth Girls) and onward to Premier Grade Cricket.

Intro to Cricket

Thinking about playing cricket, but not sure that you're ready for competitive junior cricket yet? Why not come and try out our great game at our Junior Blaster and Master Blaster events on Friday nights?! Until recently, these were called In2Cricket and T20 Blast. The name has changed, but the fun continues!

You can come along for an hour or two, learn some skills and knock out a few big shots or skittle some wickets in a fun, relaxed environment. It's a great way to get into the game for 7-12 year olds. Check out the details on our Cricket Blast page!

Junior Competition

Wests juniors compete in the Metro South West (MSW) District competition for all junior age groups from Super 7s through to U17s. Our club has achieved strong results over a number of years in junior cricket and many of our club members have progressed to representative honours.

Wests fields a team in the Taverner's U16 boys Premier Cricket competition each year, and in the 2018-19 season we will also be fielding a team in the new MSW U17 Open competition. Our goal is for our promising young cricketers to progress to the club's Premier Grade Men's teams; many of our cricketers have already successfully made that transition.

To find out more about playing Junior Cricket at Wests, please contact the Junior Age Group Co-ordinator relevant to your child's age.

Girls Cricket

The development of girls cricket development is a strong priority of the Wests club. We fields mixed junior teams in a number of junior age groups. Under MSW rules, girls are able to play in mixed teams up to two year levels below their age which enables girls to participate in the game with confidence.

We have a number of girls playing junior cricket at the club, and wherever possible we place them in teams with two or more other girls. Many of these girls have progressed to playing for our very strong Youth Girls Premier teams, Women's Premier Grade teams and representative cricket at district, state and national level.

If you want to know more about girls cricket at Wests, please contact our Girls Cricket Co-ordinator, Mick Varidel at mick@kalhide.com.au.

Modified Formats for Junior Cricket

In the younger age groups, junior cricket is played using a modified form of the game which has been scaled to match the smaller stature of young cricketers. Cricket Australia and Queensland Cricket introduced these formats in 2017, and they are progressively being introduced to the MSW junior cricket competitions. For the 2018-19 season, U10s and U11s will be substantially as per the CA formats, U12 cricket is a hybrid format, and U13s and above are a traditional format. Click on the link below to read about Cricket Australia's junior cricket formats.

Representative Cricket

The 2018-19 season sees a change in representative junior cricket with the advent of new Queensland Cricket state championship competitions for girls in U13 and U15 age groups (complementing the existing U17 comp). For boys, new Queensland Cricket State championships for U13, U14 and U15 age groups will complement the U16 Rookie challenge competition.

Wests provides pathways for our promising young cricketers to trial for these teams through our affiliation with MSW. These competitions are the official Cricket Australia pathway for young cricketers to be selected for Queensland representative age-level teams, and the Australian representative team at U19 level.

Wests also supports our junior players participating in representative cricket in schools cricket competitions.

Training

Wests juniors participate in weekly training with their club teams. The club also offers additional coaching for players wanting to take their game to the next level through the Wests +Plus Cricket Academy.
